The Cambridge American Cemetery
The only permanent WWII cemetery in Great Britain, The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial site is located in Cambridge, England, 60 miles outside of the English capital, London. The University of Cambridge, 3 miles east of the cemetery, donated 30.5 acres to the creation of the memorial, and it is the final resting place for 3,812 military personnel, each marked by a rosette. Another 5,127 names are featured on the Tablets of the Missing, for those whose bodies were not recovered.
It is described as such on the American Battle Monuments Commission website: "From the flagpole platform near the main entrance, the great mall with its reflecting pools stretches eastward. It is from the mall that the wide, sweeping curve of the burial area across the lawn is best appreciated. Along the south side are the Tablets of the Missing, and at the far end is the memorial with a chapel, two huge military maps, stained glass windows bearing the state seals and military decorations, and a mosaic ceiling memorial honoring the dead of our air forces."
The cemetery and memorial are open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM, save Christmas and New Year's Day, and remains open during British holidays. There is always a staff member in the visitor's center to assist any family members who come to the cemetery.
The Cambridge Cemetery is a common resting place for the remains of Air Force veterans, or their predecessors, the veterans of the Air Corps, like Lieutenant Eugenedes.
Construction of a new visitors' center began in 2012.
